SUMMARY OF THE INTENTIONS AND INDIRECT INTENTIONS

For the distinguishing features of intentions and indirect intentions, the great translator Ngok Loden Sherab taught:

For the “intentions,” the listener should not understand the meaning intended by the speaker from the speaker’s words alone; instead he should understand a different meaning. For the “indirect intentions,” the listener should understand the meaning that the speaker intends.

From the connected explanation of the Compendium of the Mahāyāna Teachings:

The “intentions” are formulated merely in relation to the mind. One should not accept and rely on them in terms of what is apprehended externally. For the “indirect intentions,” one can rely on what is apprehended externally.310

Therefore, having an intention toward an objective basis, such as the aggregates,311 there are the four indirect intentions and the four intentions, which make eight altogether. These intentions are taught because there could not be correct valid cognition if the statements were taken literally, and because the purpose of the statements is to benefit specific individuals.
